Celebrate Canterbury’s medieval heritage with this bold Christ Church Gateway art print by Andy Tuohy — a striking tribute to the historic entrance to Canterbury Cathedral.

Built in the early 16th century under Archbishop Thomas Bourchier, the gateway has witnessed centuries of change. In 1642–1643, during the English Civil War, Puritan iconoclasts led by Edwin Sandys caused significant damage during their “cleansing” of the cathedral. The statue of Christ in the gateway was destroyed, and the wooden gates were demolished by a group led by Richard Culmer. The gates were restored in 1660, and extensive repairs continued until 1704, but the statue would not be replaced until 1990.

The gateway also leads to one of the most famous sites in English history: Canterbury Cathedral, where Archbishop Thomas Becket was murdered on December 29, 1170, by four knights acting on the wishes of King Henry II. His martyrdom shocked Europe and transformed Canterbury into a major pilgrimage site for centuries, inspiring works such as Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales.

Today, a modern sculpture of Christ in Glory by Klaus Ringwald, installed in 1990, stands at the centre of the gateway, bringing contemporary artistry into dialogue with the medieval structure. This mix of historic drama and modern symbolism makes Christ Church Gateway one of Canterbury’s most admired and photographed landmarks.

This vibrant print captures its rich detail and layered history, making it a perfect piece for lovers of heritage, architecture and Canterbury’s Cathedral Quarter.
