Celebrate the character of Hastings Old Town with this bold art print by Andy Tuohy, depicting the tall, tar-black Net & Tackle Stores—locally known as Net Shops—on the shingle of The Stade. Today there are 39 huts, some first recorded in the 16th century and repaired or rebuilt over time; by 1851 their layout was much as it is now. Built with timber frames and weatherboard cladding, the huts were traditionally tarred for protection and set directly on the shifting shingle so they could be moved when seas ran high.

Highly combustible because of their tar preservative, the shops have suffered notable fires—most dramatically in 1846 when around twenty were lost after a fisherman fell asleep with a lit pipe—and further losses in 1961, when fire and gales destroyed several more. Use declined in the 1950s, but strong public support saved the huts from demolition. Restoration followed in the 1960s and again in 1985, preserving this distinctive working seafront landscape for future generations.
