Celebrate Hastings’ 1930s seafront modernism with this bold art print by Andy Tuohy, depicting the distinctive concrete shelters above the car park at Carlisle Parade. Designed by Sidney Little—“The Concrete King”—between 1925 and 1939, these structures are in fact Art Deco ventilation shafts for Britain’s first underground car park. Their dual purpose is beautifully resolved in a Nautical Moderne language: splayed, curved roofs, corner wing walls, fitted benches on curving concrete legs, and shimmering pearlescent tiles. Part of Little’s grand promenade scheme, the shelters are designated Grade II for their architectural and historical interest.
