Celebrate the drama of the Malvern Hills and Great Malvern’s Victorian railway heritage with this bold art print by Andy Tuohy. Opened in the early 1860s for the Worcester & Hereford Railway, the station was designed by architect E. W. Elmslie with sculpture and metalwork by William Forsyth. It is famed for its elegant platform canopies and beautiful wrought-iron pillars with exuberant foliage capitals, and for “The Worm,” an early covered passage linking the platform to the former Imperial Hotel—remarkable Victorian thinking on step-free access.
Great Malvern also carries rich cultural resonances. C. S. Lewis knew the town from schooldays at Cherbourg House and Malvern College, and local tradition holds that the town’s Victorian gas lamps and snowy hillsides helped inspire the lamppost and wintry opening of Narnia; J. R. R. Tolkien visited and walked the hills with friends. Composer Sir Edward Elgar lived for decades within sight of the Malverns, often cycling their lanes, and the landscape is widely associated with the spirit of his music.
